Daughter No Stranger is a documentary depicting the life of the director’s aunt, who could not return to her family even after her death due to outdated Confucian traditions in Korea. The director, who comes from an immigrant background, questions where her aunt belongs, why women are categorized in a group rather than being themselves, and why traditions are more important than personal history. The director traces her aunt’s life as a soprano singer, someone’s daughter, and a mother through interviews and footage. (Diaspora Film Festival)
Daughter No Stranger is a documentary about Yu Jina. To be more precise, it focuses on the events of Yu Jina getting expelled from a tomb at an ancestral gravesite due to her being “no longer a family member.” The director used photos, data footage, private camcorder footage, and songs personally sung by Aunt Yu Jina to create this film and commemorate her through the film. Uncharacteristically for a documentary film, while there are typical interview scenes in it, there are also scenes featuring the director who intervenes and presents performances. The director becomes close to an actor near the end. The shorts in the film are also arranged to show that they were “directed.” For that reason, the film makes the impression that it is neither a documentary nor a dramatic film. That's why this film is a unique piece of work that goes beyond the life of Yu Jina and merges with the director's artistic expressions. (HAM Yeon Sun, Diaspora Film Festival)
